The Small Boat Marina Industry

IMG_6280.JPG

The marina industry is most prominent in the Mediterranean and the Nordic countries, but marinas can be found all over the world. Most marinas are home to several hundred boats where most boat owners own a berth. Today, there is a great demand for berths, which means that it is an industry that is currently profitable. The industry has grown significantly in recent years, both due to the increasing popularity of nautical activities and the strong purchasing power in society, leading many people to acquire a boat and place it in a marina. The industry generates economic benefits such as jobs, investments, and infrastructure.

Marinas are considered environmentally hazardous due to their negative impact on the environment. When marinas are built, they darken large areas of the sea and remove beach zones. Even the boats themselves have a negative environmental impact through their antifouling coatings, fuel combustion, and sewage discharge. Currently, the regulations are relatively unclear, and environmental certifications in marinas are voluntary, resulting in limited efforts to reduce their negative effects. Moreover, with limited use of digital tools, there is significant potential for the industry to be part of a change. Through digitization and IoT sensors, the industry can contribute to a positive environmental development.
