About Ocean Sentinel
Ocean Sentinel is a citizens project with a mission to educate and engage individuals to fill the data gaps that exist along the world’s coasts. Using the latest technology, we have developed a low-cost sensor that collects water temperature. You as a boat user can effortlessly build your own sensor, attach behind your boat to help collect necessary data. You who are interested in taking part in the data for research projects and more can easily visit Ocean Sentinel’s website and simply download the collected data. Together we can make a difference for the ocean!
Our Story
In the spring of 2023, Ocean Sentinel was started by six students on the Industrial Economy program at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. Realizing that digitalization can be a big part of the solution to a more sustainable world, the idea of creating something of our own was born. A large part of the earth is covered by water, and right now there are areas with no collected data. With our love for the ocean, we decided to create our own sensor that can collect water temperature. The data can be used by marine biologists and scientists to try to mitigate the environmental degradation that exists. With the help of the marina industry, which is one of the industries contributing to environmental degradation, the aim is to engage boat users to attach a sensor to their boat when they leave the port to collect data when they are out on the ocean.
Our Work
We have developed a sensor based on Raspberry Pi, a low cost, credit-card sized computer. The sensor collects the water temperature which is linked to the GPS coordinate on which the boat is located. We have developed step by step how you as an individual or company can build your own sensor as well as an explanation of how it should be used. Our work includes engaging marinas to want to give their members the opportunity to use a sensor as well as ensuring that boat users build their own sensor. We also attach great importance to ensuring that boat users and other individuals are aware that a sustainability transition is needed to save the oceans.
